Gardasil linked to 18 deaths and 6 cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome

In January 2012, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published the Athena HPV study with the results of a large cervical cancer screening trial. The trial enrolled 47,208 women (21 years or older) at 61 clinical sites throughout the United States.
What they found is disturbing to say the least – the authors reported that in a sub group of 12,852 young women, the HPV vaccine reduced HPV-16 infections by only O.6%

Background:

One day I stumbled across an article shared on Facebook from Southweb.org regarding HPV Vaccinations.
I couldn't verify the site (all links listed at bottom), but I found a linking article on CBS from 2009 - "Dr. Diane Harper says young girls and their parents should receive more complete warnings before receiving the vaccine to prevent cervical cancer."

The following continues my research:

Adverse Effects of Gardasil

The Well Being Journal:
Besides the regular "adverse effects" of  "pain and inflammation at the injection site, fainting, dizziness, fever and nausea," there were reports of "Other side effects were rare, but some were very serious, including asthma, lymphadenopathy, Guillain-BarrĂ© syndrome, and systemic autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosis."Also, "According to Merck, Gardasil has not been studied for its potential to cause cancer or birth defects."

ABC News:
"Nearly 9,000 girls had "bad health events" after receiving their shots. These included 78 reported outbreaks of genital warts, 18 deaths and six cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome, which can result in paralysis. It is unknown whether there are unseen side effects, like decreasing the body's ability to fight off other strains of the HPV virus"

The CDC Website (Center for Disease Control):

Who is at risk for HPV?

"Anyone who is having (or has ever had) sex can get HPV. HPV is so common that nearly all sexually-active men and women get it at some point in their lives. This is true even for people who only have sex with one person in their lifetime." I assume that's because that one person may have HPV.

HPV Vaccination Facts
  • More than 100 strains of HPV exist, and 30 of them are associated with below-the-belt cancer.
  • Gardasil and Cervarix target two types—numbers 16 and 18
    • Thought to be major root causes of cervical cancer
    • Effective for up to five years
    • Would need to be 100 percent effective for at least 15 years to prevent a tumor
Women's Health Magazine states, "Cervical cancer is preventable without the vaccine. Because it takes so long for HPV to develop into full-blown cancer, there's plenty of time to head it off it with regular Pap tests."

ABC News made a similar statement: "Because cervical cancer takes years to develop, critics say the current information is insufficient to determine whether Gardasil works...so women still need regular pap screenings." The Well Being Journal adds, "It is rare for HPV infection to lead to cervical cancer, especially in women under the age of thirty." Also, the often understated fact is, "One alternative to the HPV vaccine is behavior modification."

Why 9- 26 year olds?

"Because more than half of all men and women are exposed to HPV within one year of becoming sexually active, the vaccine is most effective when administered before the onset of sexual activity," according to Well Being Journal.

My own thoughts: As a preschool teacher, I took classes where I was taught that 1 out of every 4 children in any of my classes have been sexually abused. I translate that to more children who will engage in further activities at a younger age, even seeking other children out, not counting those who were never abused but not guided in their curiosities. There were 9/10 year olds in my own 4th grade classroom in the 90's that claimed they had had sex while at a dance at school.

Access

ABC news reports that it costs between "$400 to $1,000 for the necessary three doses of the vaccine." Are the girls at the highest risk going to even have access to this vaccine? What does that mean for children entering school in Virginia, if this passes? (Also from ABC) "Virginia is set to require all young girls to get vaccinated before entering middle school this fall, and dozens of other states are considering whether to make the Gardasil shot mandatory for young women. "

Another Website, Natural Health, conveys concern about the potential benefits vastly being undermined by the potential for adverse effects. "In January 2012, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published the Athena HPV study with the results of a large cervical cancer screening trial. The trial enrolled 47,208 women (21 years or older) at 61 clinical sites throughout the United States. What they found is disturbing to say the least – the authors reported that in a sub group of 12,852 young women, the HPV vaccine reduced HPV-16 infections by only O.6%."

Is it worth the risk to you?
